Besant presents the Isle of Bramble as a busy place of trade before the growth of London and restores the vanished palaces of Westminster and Whitehall. He portrays the life of the Abbey, with its services, its rule, its anchorites and its Sanctuary along with the life of the town and its people. The role of Westminster in the introduction of printing to England is also explored.
