Three Irish Glossaries editor Whitley Stokes (1830-1909) has been named by many scholars as "the greatest of living Celtic philologists." A prolific researchers and writer, Stokes began his career in legal studies and later pursued Celtic scholarship. In addition to numerous published works, Stokes left behind 150 Celtic research notebooks that were recently discovered by Daibha O Croinln, a professor of history at NUI in Galway.
