The Playboy Of The Western World
The Playboy Of The Western World
By: J.M. Synge
Picture a young lad names Christopher Mahon (Christy), who is living along the wild coastal area of Mayo, Ireland, at the start of the twentieth century. Given to boasting and all manner of prideful thoughts, he tells a farmer named Philly that he has gone and killed his father. "Don't strike me. I killed my poor father, Tuesday was a week for doing the like of that." What arises from this dark comedic atmosphere is a modicum of respect for the deed. That is, until not long after Philly speaks to Old Mahon, the not-so-dead father and says "And who hit you at all?" To which Old Mahan triumphantly replies, "It was my own son hit me. Would you believe that?"
