By: P.T. Barnum
Well-known American showman PhineasTaylor (P.T.) Barnum ended his public career in March of 1868. Upon retiring, he moved to Waldemere, his newly built residence near Seaside Park, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. There he completed Struggles and Triumphs; Forty Years? Recollections, his 765 page revised autobiography, after becoming dissatisfied with the high price being charged for the 1854 edition The Life of P.T. Barnum. Upon purchase of the original electrotype plates, Illustrations, and copyright, he added supplementary chapters ending with February of 1873, along with two lengthy appendices. In the 1873 autobiography, Barnum expresses his desire to ?record a long and busy career with the sincere hope that my experience will benefit my fellowmen.?
