Very early on the morning of April 19, 1775, large numbers of Red Coat soldiers left Boston in search of weapons believed to have been stored by the Colonials in Concord, Massachusetts. Paul Revere–and many others about whom no poem was ever written–traveled on horseback to warn the countryside that the British Regulars were coming to seize those weapons. The Regulars were greeted on their way to Concord by the citizen militia of Lexington, resulting in the first skirmish of the American Revolution.

"Revolutionary Stories: The Tales Behind What to See in Lexington" was prepared in anticipation of the 250th Anniversary of April 19, 1775, and outlines the historic events of that day–in many cases in the words of people who were there. Visitors and readers can follow the maps to retrace the events as marked by monuments, plaques and original artifacts in the historic houses and the Lexington Depot, which opened in 2025. The flow of information is in rough chronological order to help organize the day’s events.
