My Musical Life

In this book published first in the 1920s, Damrosch tells his own musical story. Born during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 in an area of Europe straddling Germany and Poland, Damrosch rose to become the conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra. He became one of the pioneers of classical music for the radio in America and taught that generation to love that kind of music which carried forward to today. He is also famous for conducting the premieres of George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F and "An American in Paris".
