“Mimi and Mikey’s Adventures in China and America” ‘A Birthday Celebration’ is an educational children’s book, which reveals a variety of differences between the Chinese and American cultures. This is intended to be the first book of a series, which will enable children from five years old and older to establish an understanding of diversity through the eyes of children. The story begins in America where two families (Chinese and American), develop a friendship while studying in American colleges. Their families often spend time together and have children the same age. The two children often play together and speak both English and Mandarin. When Mimi’s parents move back to China, Mikey becomes sad until he and his family are invited to visit their friends in China to celebrate Mimi’s birthday.

The trip to China becomes an educational adventure in which Mikey is constantly learning about Chinese etiquette and traditions. He discovers that simple gestures and actions could be considered disrespectful or rude to others, if not done correctly. Mikey often finds himself in situations of making simple mistakes or just being surprised by cultural differences. Mikey and Mimi help each other to develop not only a strong friendship, but also a deep understanding of each other’s traditions, foods, and culture.

The 46-page book is written in English, Mandarin, and Pinyin to help young readers with their pronunciation. It also includes comprehension questions, which can be discussed between teachers, parents, and children to ensure understanding of key concepts.
