Excerpt from Chapter 1: Mr. Choate 's ancestors were genuine New England�ers and, for generations, residents of Salem, Massa�chusetts. His maternal grandfather, Gamaliel Hodges, was a fine, sturdy figure at seventy, full of life and health, and good for many years to follow. He was a giant in stature, is said to have been the tallest man in Salem, and at his best, or worst, weighed no less than 350 pounds. His brothers, Benjamin and George, were of like stature.
