How Firm A Foundation: A History of the First Congregational Church Stockbridge, Massachusetts
How Firm A Foundation: A History of the First Congregational Church Stockbridge, Massachusetts
By The 200th Anniversary Book Committee of The Stockbridge Congregational Church
The Congregational Society of Stockbridge was founded as a mission to the Mohican Tribe in 1734 and over the next century built three churches, the last of which turns 200 years old this year. While much of the early history involving the Mohicans and Great Awakening pastor Jonathan Edwards has been written, the most recent church history was published in 1888. To fill this void, a committee of people who attend the church banded together to research and write an updated history that takes the reader into 2024.
In addition to telling the stories of ministers and church leaders, How Firm a Foundation uses the architectural history of the buildings as a framework for telling stories of the many other men and women who created, worshipped in, and enlivened those buildings.
New research has uncovered previously unknown work by well-known architects, including a founder of the American Institute of Architects. Stories of loss and tragedy are coupled with those of triumph and celebration. The book is copiously illustrated with black and white and color photos, drawings, and previously unpublished images. It also features oral histories with long-time members and a previous minister.
