“Grandma’s Sofrito” depicts the warm embrace of a Puerto Rican kitchen as the family readies itself for their traditional New Year’s Eve celebration. The girls attempt to bypass their mother’s monthly ritual, but she involves them in the preparation of sofrito – the foundation of a medley of spices for their customary dishes. The grandmother skillfully imparts a historical and spiritual lesson to the girls about the significance of this tradition. In doing so, she instills in them both the pride associated with crafting sofrito and a lasting yearning to perpetuate this cherished ritual.

“El sofrito de Abuela” muestra el cálido abrazo de una cocina puertorriqueña mientras la familia se prepara para su tradicional celebración de Nochevieja. Las niñas intentan eludir el ritual mensual de su madre, pero ella las involucra en la preparación del sofrito, base de una mezcla de especias para sus platos habituales. La abuela imparte hábilmente a las niñas una lección histórica y espiritual sobre el significado de esta tradición. Al hacerlo, les inculca tanto el orgullo asociado a la elaboración del sofrito como el deseo de perpetuar este preciado ritual.
