Getting Ahead of Your Child's Headaches: A Guide for Families
Getting Ahead of Your Child's Headaches: A Guide for Families
By: Victoria E. Karian, RN, MSN, CPNP-PC
This is a book about managing your child’s headaches and migraines, covering all aspects of life with pediatric headache and migraine. Chapters cover information about the type of different pediatric headache and migraine diagnoses; lifestyle measures which can reduce the suffering from these diagnoses, including stress management; treatments available, including supplements, preventive and treatment medications, complementary therapies, devices and procedures; common medical conditions also seen with migraine; community and online resources for families; resources for dealing with school issues; and moving into adulthood with migraine and headache.
Migraine episodes often start in childhood or adolescence. It is one of the top 5 diagnoses seen in childhood. One in four households in America has a family member with migraine. It is the third most common disease in the world, affecting one out of every seven people globally. Migraine interferes with education and social activities and is disruptive to overall family life and school functioning. There is a lack of specialized headache medical providers and even fewer providers focused on pediatrics. As a result, there is a deficit in family education to help better manage a life with migraine and headaches. This book fills a hole in the existing popular medical literature for these families, with current, up-to-date information, tips, and resources.
This book is geared to the large and under-served population of families with children (and parents) who are dealing with headaches and migraine and was written by Victoria Karian CPNP-PC, a pediatric nurse practitioner with over 40 years of experience in pediatrics and more than 15 years’ experience with pain and headache disorders.
