William Roscoe Thayer was a Harvard University educated Bostonian who wrote numerous books about Italian history and American history. In the preface he bashed Parson Weems who wrote "pernicious drivel" and "rubbish" of Washington soon after he died. Weems is the man who brought us the myth of young George Washington who "chopped down a cherry tree and could not lie ." But Thayer thinks of Washington as a "superb athlete equipped for every ordeal which life might cause him to face."
