Gardening for the South
Gardening for the South
Gardeners in "The Deep South" states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee, during the mid 1850's, had access to general horticultural publications, but most of these were "wholly unsuited to our climate," writes William N. White, author of Gardening in the South; or the Kitchen and Fruit Garden: With the Best Methods for their Cultivation. In his work he points to important seasonal differences like "heat and dryness", along with mild southern winters that "admit of garden work nearly every day of the year." Hence, the lavish descriptions of English or northern gardens provided recommendations of plant species of little value to a southern grower.
