Springfield, Mass., was the first town settled within the present limits of the State, west of Boston. A few Connecticut towns were settled at a slightly earlier date. Wethersfield and Windsor were a little more than a year in advance, but Hartford, where the most important settlement was begun, was simultaneous in its date of founding with that of Springfield.
