Adam Bede
Adam Bede
Succeeding theScenes of Clerical Life, Adam Bede was first published by Blackwood in 1859. It took some fifteen months to write. The first and last parts were written at Richmond ; the middle portions chiefly at Munich and Dresden. George Eliot has told us with what "great enjoyment" she wrote the original second volume, and she said of the whole book: "I love it very much, and am deeply thankful to have written it, whatever the public may say to it!' The novel very quickly made its effect on the public. Charles Reade said in his first enthusiasm over it that it was "the finest thing since Shakespeare"; and Herbert Spencer brought word to its writer, before it had been two months published, that it had been quoted in the House of Commons.
